THE ROOM

What happens when James works the room

Close-up magic is performed in your guests' hands, not on a stage they are watching from a distance.

James moves table to table through a reception, giving each group five to ten minutes. Cards vanish, coins travel, borrowed objects do things they should not, and thoughts are read out of the air. Everything happens at arm's length, which is the point. There is no angle where you cannot see, no assistant, and nothing that needs a spotlight. Strangers who were standing in silence with a drink end up leaning over the same table, and the room gets louder as he crosses it. It is the fastest way to warm a room that has not warmed itself.

When walk-around magic works best

The gaps in your night are where events lose their energy. This fills them.

01
Drinks receptions
The first hour, when guests know two people each and nobody wants to be the one to start a conversation.
02
Networking and conference breaks
Something to gather around that is not the coffee urn, and a reason for two strangers to talk.
03
Wedding photographs
Ninety minutes where the couple are outside and the guests are indoors with nothing to do.
04
Between courses
Long service gaps at a gala, where the room cools down and never quite recovers.
05
Before a stage show
Warming the room table by table so the headline slot lands on an audience already paying attention.

What is included in a walk-around booking

Simple to book, and it needs almost nothing from your venue.

01
60 to 90 minutes on the floor
Enough to reach every table in a room of up to roughly 150 guests, with time to go back to the ones who ask.
02
No stage, no sound, no rehearsal
He needs no equipment from you. If there is a room and there are people in it, the act works.
03
Mentalism as well as magic
Most close-up performers do magic. James reads minds table to table too, which is what people remember.
04
Dressed for your room
Black tie, business dress or whatever your dress code says. He blends into your event rather than announcing himself.

How many guests one magician can cover

The honest answer, because getting this wrong is how a reception ends up half entertained.

In 90 minutes James can properly reach around 120 to 150 guests, working in groups of six to ten for five to ten minutes at a time. Above that number you either extend the time or the back of the room misses out, and a guest who watched everyone else get the magic feels worse than one who never knew it was happening. For 200 or more, the honest recommendation is to pair walk-around with a stage set so the whole room is covered at once, or to book two hours and accept a lighter pass. James will tell you which on the call rather than take the booking and hope.

Why this is not the usual party magician

That label covers children's party acts and corporate performers alike. Only one belongs in front of your clients.

A lot of close-up work in Dubai is children's material adapted upward: sponge balls, a bright waistcoat, a routine performed the same way at every table. James is a Magic Circle member, admitted by examination, and the material is written for adults who have seen a card trick before. It leans on mentalism, so most of what happens takes place in a guest's own head rather than on the table, so no two tables ever see the same act. He has performed it for Coca-Cola, Bentley, Amazon, Microsoft and Freshfields, and at private royal family events.

Where close-up magic works in Dubai

Anywhere with people standing up, which is most of your night.

Hotel ballroom receptions, private dining rooms, villa parties, rooftops, yacht decks, conference foyers and the outdoor terraces Dubai uses for eight months of the year. Close-up magic needs no power, no sound and no lighting rig, so it works where a stage act cannot go and it survives wind, noise and a moving crowd. James works most often across Dubai and Abu Dhabi and regularly in Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia. Travel outside the Emirates is quoted with the booking rather than added afterwards.

Pairing walk-around with the stage show

Most bookings take both, and the reason is arithmetic rather than upselling.

One performer on the floor covers 150 guests in 90 minutes. One performer on a stage covers 300 in 30. Put them together and a full evening is handled by one booking, one contract and one arrival, instead of a band for the reception and a comedian after dinner. It also builds. Guests who met James at their table during drinks already know who he is when he walks on stage, so the room is with him from the first line rather than from the third. Hosts who book only the reception set often add the stage show the second time.

AT YOUR TABLE

What actually happens at your table

Five minutes, six people, and nothing that needs explaining first.

James arrives at a group already talking, and within a sentence they are watching. A borrowed ring vanishes and comes back somewhere impossible. A card signed by one guest is found by another. Then it turns, and he starts telling people things instead of showing them things: the name somebody is thinking of, a childhood memory, a number chosen in silence. That shift from magic to mind reading is the moment the group stops watching politely and starts calling other people over. He leaves before they want him to, which is why they talk about it for the rest of the night.

Hiring a close-up magician in Dubai, answered

What is close-up magic?
Close-up magic is magic performed in your hands rather than on a stage. The magician moves table to table through a group, using cards, coins and borrowed objects at arm's length. James adds mentalism to it, so thoughts are read as well as objects made to vanish, which is unusual for the format.
What is table magic?
Table magic is close-up magic performed for seated guests, usually between courses or during a long service gap. Each table gets five to ten minutes. It is the same craft as a walk-around reception set, but the audience is sitting down and the routines are built for a table rather than a standing circle.
What is a roving magician?
A roving magician, also called a strolling or walk-around magician, moves through your guests instead of performing from one spot. It means everybody gets a front row seat at some point in the night. James works this way for 60 to 90 minutes at a typical Dubai reception.
How long does walk around magic last?
A standard booking is 60 to 90 minutes on the floor. That is enough to reach roughly 120 to 150 guests properly. For larger rooms, either extend the time or pair it with a stage set so the whole room is covered at once. James will say which fits on the call.
How many guests can close-up magic cover?
Around 120 to 150 in 90 minutes, working in groups of six to ten. Beyond that, some guests will watch other people get the magic, which is worse than not booking it. For 200 or more, the honest answer is walk-around plus a stage show rather than walk-around alone.
Do you need a stage or sound for close-up magic?
No. There is no stage, no microphone, no lighting and no rehearsal. If there is a room and there are people in it, the act works. That is why it fits terraces, yacht decks and conference foyers where a stage act cannot go.
Is it suitable for a corporate audience?
Yes, and it is written for one. There is no children's material, nothing religious or political, and nobody is embarrassed in front of colleagues. James has performed close-up for Coca-Cola, Bentley, Amazon, Microsoft and Freshfields, and at private royal family events.
How much does a close-up magician cost in Dubai?
Every booking is quoted individually. The figure depends on how long James is on the floor, guest numbers, the venue and travel. Send your date and rough guest numbers and he will come back with a price rather than a range.
