FIRST CONTACT

What happens when you get in touch

No booking form that disappears into a diary. A conversation about your room, then a recommendation.

Tell James the date, the venue and roughly how many people will be there, and what the night is for. He replies with the format that actually fits, which is sometimes smaller than the one you asked about, and sends showreels from a room like yours rather than his favourites. If it works, he holds the date while you get sign-off. There is no deposit chased before you have an answer internally, and there is no pressure to decide on the call.

What to send in your first message

Five things, and he can quote from them without a second email.

01
The date
Including whether it is fixed or still moving. Peak season in Dubai runs October to March and weekends go first.
02
The venue
Or the shortlist, if you have not booked one. It changes what the show needs and sometimes what it can be.
03
Guest numbers
Roughly is fine. It is the single thing that decides between walk-around, a stage set, or both.
04
The kind of event
A gala, a conference, a wedding, a client dinner or a company celebration. Each one wants a different slot.
05
What the night is for
A retirement, a launch, an awards night or a thank you. This is the part that shapes the material.

How a booking gets confirmed

Four steps, and none of them needs a meeting.

01
The call
15 minutes on your event, your room and your running order. No obligation and no sales pitch.
02
The proposal
The recommended format, the timings and a price for your event rather than a rate card.
03
The paperwork
Contract, public liability and anything else your venue or procurement team asks for, sent ahead of the date.
04
The week before
A short call to confirm timings, the staging note for your AV team, and any custom content signed off.

How quickly you will hear back

Within a working day, from James rather than an assistant.

Enquiries are answered personally. If your date is already booked he will say so immediately rather than leaving you waiting, and where he can he will suggest another performer worth speaking to. If the format you have asked about is wrong for your guest numbers, he will say that too. Walk-around magic for 300 guests means most of your room watches other people get it. Better to hear that now than after you sign.

Where James travels

Dubai is home. The work is not.

James is based in Dubai and performs across the Emirates, most often in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. He works regularly across the Gulf, in Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia, and has performed in nine countries in total, including regular work in the UK for FTI Consulting over five years. Travel outside the Emirates is quoted with the booking rather than added afterwards, so the figure you put in your budget is the figure you pay. For remote or split audiences, the virtual show reaches every office at once with no travel at all.

Which format your numbers point to

Guest numbers settle this faster than budget does, so here is the honest map.

Up to 50 guests seated for dinner, the Platinum Show is built for that exact room and every person is close enough to take part. Between 50 and 300 with a stage and a speech slot, stage mentalism is your headline act. A standing reception of any size wants walk-around magic, which properly covers about 120 to 150 guests in 90 minutes. Above that, take both, because one performer cannot reach 300 standing guests in an hour and a half and a guest who watched other tables get the magic feels worse than one who never knew it happened. If your audience is remote or split across offices, the virtual show reaches all of them at once.

The three mistakes people make when booking

Each one costs money. Each one is fixable in a single short call.

01
Booking the wrong slot
Entertainment straight after a long speech lands on a spent room. After the main course or after the awards is where it works.
02
Underbuying the time
60 minutes of walk-around across 200 guests means most of the room misses it. Numbers decide the length, not the budget.
03
Leaving it to the venue
An in-house recommendation is a convenience, not a shortlist. Ask who they booked twice and why.

Booking direct or through an agency

Both work, and it is worth knowing what changes.

James is represented by Motivate Talent, so if your company already books through an agency the work can go that route and your procurement process stays intact. Booking him directly means you speak to the person performing rather than to a booker, which usually gets a straighter answer about whether your format is right. The show and the price are the same either way. Need a supplier on an approved list? Say so in your first message and James will name the quicker route.

What James needs from your venue

Almost nothing, and it is worth telling your coordinator early so nobody plans around a problem that does not exist.

Walk-around magic needs no power, no sound, no lighting and no rehearsal. If there is a room and there are people standing in it, the act works, which is why it survives terraces, yacht decks and conference foyers. A stage set needs a microphone, a clear area of roughly three metres by two, and lighting that keeps the audience visible rather than in darkness. No stage build, no backdrop and no technical rehearsal, so it can follow a dinner service without a room turn. James sends a single page to your AV team ahead of the day covering all of it.

Booking a magician in Dubai, answered

How do you hire a magician?
Send the date, the venue and rough guest numbers. Any performer worth booking will come back with a recommended format rather than a price list, because the right act depends on whether your guests are seated or standing and how many of them there are. James replies within a working day.
How do you book a magician?
A short call, then a written proposal with the format, timings and a price for your event. Contract and public liability follow, and a final call the week before confirms timings. James holds your date through the sign-off rather than asking for a deposit first.
How much does a magician cost?
It depends on three things: how long he performs, whether it is walk-around, a stage show or both, and travel. James quotes per event rather than off a rate card, and the quote includes the consultation and any custom content. Send your date for a figure.
How far in advance should I book a magician?
Peak season in Dubai runs October to March and weekends go first, so a few months of notice is safest for a gala. Four to six weeks is usually enough for a smaller dinner or a wedding reception. Ask anyway, because dates do come free.
What do you need to know to quote?
The date, the venue, rough guest numbers, the type of event and what the night is for. Those five things are enough to recommend a format and give you a price without a second round of emails.
Can James hold a date while we decide?
Yes. He will hold it while you get internal sign-off, without a deposit. If somebody else asks for the same date he will come back to you before releasing it rather than letting it go quietly.
Does James travel outside Dubai?
Yes. He performs across the Emirates, regularly in Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia, and has worked in nine countries including the UK. Travel is quoted with the booking rather than added afterwards, so nothing arrives on the invoice unexpectedly.
Can we book James for a virtual event?
Yes. The virtual show runs live over Zoom, Teams or Meet for 30 to 45 minutes, and reaches every office at once with no travel. It works best up to about 100 participants, where guests can be named and called on directly.
