ABOUT JAMES

I discovered magic at 29. It changed everything.

Eight years, nine countries, private royal events and over 20 global brands, from a man who started late and made up for it.

THE START

How this started

Most professional magicians begin as children. James did not, and it turned out to be the advantage.

He found magic at 29, which in this trade is late enough that people assume you will stay an amateur. What it actually meant was that he had already spent a decade in rooms full of adults, reading how they behave, and he never had to unlearn the habit of performing for children. Everything he built was aimed at grown-ups from the first day. Eight years later he performs across nine countries, for private royal family events and for over 20 global brands. The late start is still the thing that shapes the act, because it was designed for the room he actually works in.

CREDENTIALS

What being in the Magic Circle means

Anyone can call themselves a magician. Only a few hundred people in the world hold this.

The Magic Circle was founded in London in 1905 and remains the most respected magicians' society in the world. You do not buy your way in. You perform for a panel of members, you are examined on technique and on how you handle a room, and members can be expelled for exposing how any of it works. James is a member. For anyone booking a performer they have never seen, that carries more weight than a showreel does, because a showreel is edited and an examination in front of magicians is not.

THE WORK

The rooms he has worked

Twenty global brands, a royal family, and a charity fundraiser where the room went quiet.

Coca-Cola, Bentley, Amazon, Microsoft, Salesforce, illy, Levi's, FlixBus, Designers Guild and Freshfields have all booked James. FTI Consulting have used him for their top tier corporate events for half a decade, across the Middle East and the UK, and their head of marketing for the region has said so on the record. He has performed at private royal family events and at the British Benevolent Fund fundraiser. He has appeared on the Lovin Dubai Show and been featured in Madrid Metropolitan. He is represented by Motivate Talent.

Two disciplines, one performer

Magic and mentalism are usually two different careers. He works in both, and the join is the point.

Visual magic gets attention. A ring vanishes, a card appears somewhere impossible, and the room leans in. Mentalism holds it, because the moment James stops showing people things and starts telling them things is the moment the atmosphere changes. Most performers do one or the other. Doing both means a single booking can headline a stage for 300 people and then work a reception table to table, which is why hosts stop hiring two acts. It also means the material never runs on rails, because a mind reading routine changes with whoever volunteers.

01

Nothing here is psychic

He says it on stage, and saying it makes the rest of it land harder.

Mentalism is misdirection, psychology, suggestion, memory and a great deal of practice. James does not claim otherwise, at an event or anywhere else. The honesty is not a weakness in the act, it is what powers it, because an audience told there is a method and still unable to find one is far more astonished than one being asked to believe. It matters commercially too. A performer claiming genuine psychic powers is a risk to put in front of your clients, and one who is straight about the craft is not.

02

Why Dubai

The hardest audience in the world to entertain, and the best one to build an act for.

A Dubai ballroom can hold eleven nationalities at one table. Comedy needs a shared sense of humour and a shared first language, and most acts quietly soften themselves until they land with nobody. Mentalism needs neither, because a thought is a thought in any language, so the material never had to be watered down. Working here for eight years built an act that travels anywhere. James now performs across the Emirates, in Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia, and in the UK, and it is the same show everywhere.

03

What the practice actually looks like

The unglamorous part, and the reason the show holds up in a room that has seen everything.

A single mentalism routine takes months before it goes anywhere near a paying audience. It gets built, tested on people who are allowed to be rude about it, taken apart and rebuilt, then performed badly in low-stakes rooms until the timing settles. Most of what James works on never makes the show. The material that survives is the material that still works when a guest does something nobody predicted, which is most nights, because the whole act depends on strangers making free choices. That is the difference between a performer with a set and a performer with a craft, and an audience can feel it inside two minutes even if they could never say why.

THE REAL BRIEF

What clients actually book him for

Not magic. The thing magic does to a room.

Event planners rarely ring wanting a magician. They ring because the last gala was flat, because the reception never warmed up, or because a chairman is retiring and the evening has to be right. The brief is always about the room rather than the act. James is booked because mentalism holds a seated international audience that a band cannot, because it needs no shared language in a city where that matters more than anywhere, and because it gives guests something to retell afterwards. Sunil Mashari at FTI Consulting put it plainly, saying James has perennially wowed their most important and senior clients across five years of top tier events.

BEFORE THE DAY

How he works with you before the day

The show is built for your event, which means a conversation rather than a booking form.

Every booking starts with a call about the room, not the act. Who is in it, what the night is for, what the running order looks like and what would count as a success. From there James recommends a format rather than selling the biggest one, tells you honestly when your guest numbers need a stage set instead of walk-around, and sends showreels that match your audience rather than his favourites. He arrives early, introduces himself to your coordinator, and moves with your timings when they shift, which they usually do.

About James, answered

What is the Magic Circle?
The Magic Circle is the world's most respected magicians' society, founded in London in 1905. Members are admitted by examination rather than subscription, and can be expelled for exposing methods. James is a member, which is a working guarantee of skill when you are booking someone you have never seen perform.
How do you join the Magic Circle?
By performing for a panel of existing members and passing an examination on technique and presentation, or by submitting a written thesis on magic. It is not a subscription you buy. That is exactly why the membership means something to an event planner comparing performers online.
Where is James Fabulous based?
James is based in Dubai and performs across the Emirates, most often in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. He works regularly across the Gulf, in Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia, and has performed in nine countries in total, including regular work in the UK.
How long has James been performing?
Eight years professionally. He discovered magic at 29 and turned it into a career, which is unusually late for this trade and is the reason the act was built for adult audiences from the start rather than adapted upward from children's work.
What is a mentalist?
A mentalist reads minds rather than doing tricks with props. No cards, no boxes, no rabbits. The material is built from what the audience is already thinking, so everyone in the room is a possible volunteer. James performs it both on stage and table to table.
Which brands has James performed for?
Coca-Cola, Bentley, Amazon, Microsoft, Salesforce, illy, Levi's, FlixBus, Designers Guild and Freshfields, among over 20 global brands. FTI Consulting have booked him for their top tier corporate events for five years. He has also performed at private royal family events.
Has James been on television?
Yes. He appeared on the Lovin Dubai Show for an interview and a live performance, and he has been featured in Madrid Metropolitan magazine. He has also performed for TOWIE cast members. He is represented by Motivate Talent.
Is mentalism real?
No, and James says so on stage. Nothing is psychic. It is misdirection, psychology, suggestion and eight years of practice, performed honestly as entertainment. That honesty is what makes the impossible moments land harder, and it is why he is safe in front of your clients.
